Review: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ A Fans Dream

Deadpool & Wolverine is a comic book nerds greatest fantasy. There was a reason why Marvel jumped at the chance to make this film after hearing multiple pitches from Ryan Reynolds and Director Shawn Levy, it was money in the bank …. a win .. win, if you will. Marvel gets a huge box-office return while giving the fans what they have wanted. Some might argue that Fox gave us this already but that was more a nightmare than any attempt at servicing fans (Ryan Reynolds with his mouth sewn shut…. really).

For fans who haven’t seen the Loki series, I would recommend at least checking out the last couple of episodes from season 2 so you have some knowledge base going into the film. The TVA does play a big part in the film. What I did find to be a bit unexpected was how the film in many ways is a tribute to the “Fox” days and is more of a bridge to a future full of Mutants at Marvel. Are their cameos in the film? Yes, and many will likely be spoiled in the 1st few days of opening so if you like being surprised, I’d go see the film asap opening weekend.

Probably the bigger surprise is just how effective Emma Corin was as Cassandra Nova. Being honest, I didn’t really get that casting choice in the beginning but she ends up being one of the best Comic Book Movie Villains we’ve seen in recent years (beside say those major ones that we are all too familiar with). For those familiar with her connection to Logan, let’s just say that if anyone was on the fence about whether or not we are in this new era of mutants, you won’t be after meeting her.

The success of the film though is a testament to the power of chemistry. These two are having so much fun on screen that it adds to the experience. While some of the Marvel fans (me being one of those) were a little concerned with how they were going to navigate doing this film while still honoring the brilliance of Logan, they do manage to find a way to address that almost immediately that is both inventive and right in line with what fans have come to expect from Deadpool.

There’s a joke in the final trailer where Wade acknowledges after falling out of time portal with Logan on to a car (long story), that Disney is going to make him do this role until he’s 90. If we could only be so lucky. After this film crosses the one billion dollar mark at the box-office world wide (and it will), I imagine they will have plans in place to see these two in either another movie like this or part of say an Avengers film, the possibilities are endless.

Deadpool & Wolverine, in theaters now.
