Dune Part 2 is one of those rare movies that comes across as being slightly over hyped but in reality, it isn’t. Denis Villeneuve manages to build upon the first film which was critically acclaimed a technical marvel and gives audiences something special. Dune Part 2 is an engrossing pulse pounding blockbuster whose technical and sound design bring this narrative to new heights. Watching this film in anything less than an IMAX screen deprives audiences of the film’s marvelous cinematography. Personally, I would never want to watch it at home after seeing the film as it was intended.
One of the biggest contributing factors as to why Dune Part 2 soars is due to the fantastic work from the film’s stars, Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. Both Actors are fantastic and, in many ways, elevate the source material. Much has been made about the length of the film (almost 3 hours), but the film’s narrative is constructed in such a way that doesn’t allow audiences to wonder how much longer. Right from the get-go, the intensity level of Dune Part 2 is about an 8.
The returning ensemble cast is stellar as well and along with the two leads sets up what could be quite the cinematic universe for Villeneuve to play in. The only thing likely stopping Warner Brothers from announcing anymore Dune films is they want to see how well audience’s turnout for the film. While Chalamet proved that his star power was more than enough to draw quite the box-office for Wonka, Zendaya and Chalamet in the same film could draw even higher ticket sales. The question then becomes is how much of a box-office does the film need for Warner Brothers to declare Dune Part 2 a success. 200 million? 300 million? Maybe higher? My guess is that this speculation is pointless, and they already have a tentative date for Dune 3.
