The Handmaid’s Tale is beginning to go down a very dark road. For those who want more action, you have to look at the broader picture. June (Elisabeth Moss) is driven by a desire to reunite with her daughter Hannah and is willing to endure a torturous life to do so. However, after this weeks episode, that door could be shut forever (the Martha who was helping her was hung after a tip from a fellow Handmaid lead Gilead police to arrest her). June realizes this, and it results in her attacking the Handmaiden who shut that door. She now has nothing to lose. This is June’s Heisenberg moment.
I do also find it rather fascinating that the show is toying with moving the Waterford’s to Washington. The Winslow’s are showing off the glamorous lifestyle that comes with living at the epicenter of Gilead (something that Serena and Fred are very into). Could this be there next stop? Also, what do you make of Commander Winslow’s affection towards Fred (Joseph Fiennes)?
Just as pressure begins to build for Emily (Alexis Bledel) in Canada as she has to answer for her crimes, It does seems that Waterfords are beginning to return to how they were. Could they be keeping up appearances or is Serena that driven to get her “baby” back that she’s willing to compromise her feelings?
Overall, I found the episode to be shot very well and the narrative to be entirely appropriate. For fans to get what they want, June has to lose her one shred of hope, so she begins to give in her to her need for vengeance. That day is coming real soon!
