Review: ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ Defies All Logic

‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ is patently absurd. There isn’t much about if anything in the film that make any sense, yet it appears audiences are okay with that. Why? Could it be that sometimes a movie’s plot can be as simple as seeing a bunch of bad ass monsters fighting? I think that’s part of the answer and a big reason why Warner Brothers didn’t feel the need to ramp up their promotion train for this one. Quite frankly, the trailer was all they needed. When moviegoers first saw the trailer, they mentally were asking themselves, do we get to see batshit action sequences. The moment they saw Kong take a swing at Godzilla; they were sold. My wife reminded me after seeing the film that HBO’s old tagline was “If you want art, go to a museum.” That certainly applies when speaking about this release.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ is once is directed by Adam Wingard who has been at the helm of the previous monsterverse films. Wingard’s strongest attribute is he has a strong sense of what the fans crave in these films. Wingard has made no secret about his love of cryptids. This film was made for the fans. Fans around the world want to see these monsters f up everything and Wingard delivers it in spades. The casts understand this as well. Rebecca Hall (Dr. Andrews) was quoted in people magazine stating that at times it was hard not to laugh while filming this sequel. The setup is absurd. The background story they go with had me thinking that perhaps the screen writers may have been drunk during their writing sessions. Yet, it matters not. Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, and Bryan Tyree Henry are nothing more than set pieces in Wingard’s latest love letters to all thing’s monsters. Don’t go in expecting the world, and you won’t be disappointed. Escape the stressors of the real world. Buy a ticket, turn off your brain, get some snacks from the concessions, and watch these monsters fuck things up.
